There Are No Absolutes In Job Search

There Are No Absolutes In Job Search The entire job search process and allof itselements should probably be approached with a trial and error mentality. If it were an exact science, this wouldnt be difficult. Job seekers are looking for the right answers however, there isnt necessarily one right answer for each individual. RESUMES: Youll find that no two people will give you the same feedback on your resume. This is confusing as all get out. Objective or no objective, one page vs. two and the list goes on and on. What worked for one person may not necessarily work for you. What this means is that youll want to monitor the outcomes of the resumes you are sending to employers (not hit count your resume gets on the job boards). The one absolute on a resume is that it contains your name and contact information. COVER LETTERS: To include a cover letter or not? No two people receiving resumes have the same process for reviewing them or preference in what they are looking for. The general guideline is to include a well crafted one. INTERVIEWS: The process of hiring is highly personal. It is about chemistry. Even if you were the most talented and skilled candidate, you may not get the job. There are even unknown factors that can prevent a job seeker from getting the job- an internal candidate comes forward at the last minute, a past employee wants to come back, the boss has a friend of a friend that needs a job, etc. Get a lot of them and prepare well. It is a numbers game, you wont land every job you interview for. NETWORKING: Said to be the most effective job search method, networking wont work for everyone. You are playing the odds. If you are networking strategically with the right group of people AND you are doing it well, your chances might increase. It still wont guarantee you a job. CONTACTING RECRUITERS: It isnt enough just to contact them. Again, there are so many variables when working with recruiters. Be informed understand how they work and who they work with. Youll want them to know you, trust you and believe they can make money by placing you and that you will stick. LINKEDIN, FACEBOOK, TWITTER: Social media is not the quick fix or magic bullet either. These are only tools you can use to help provide you with information and a vehicle for spreading your message. Not the message that you are unemployed, but the message that you are great at what you do. These tools also can make it easier to build on line relationships which are not the same or necessarily as strong as personal relationships. They have been known to lead to personal relationships however. While there are no absolutes, there are best practices: Be sure of what you can do Be focused in the message you are delivering Be of great value and service Be able to tell good stories of your accomplishments Be findable online Be proactive in your search Be likeable Be authentic

A Career With An Element Of Risk IM HIRED

A Career With An Element Of Risk Taking the Right Risks in your Career If youre the type of person to face risks head on, then there is a good chance that you want to reflect this in your career choices. The truth is its actually surprisingly easy to find jobs which invoke a degree of risk.   If you are looking for an exciting career which pushes you to your limits, below is a few examples of the kinds of careers open to you.   A Career as a Police Officer This is certainly not a career for everyone. A certain type of person is generally drawn to the police force, and you will probably know if you are that kind of person. Being a police officer is definitely a highly risky career, and you will be entering in a number of high-risk situations, some of which could put your life in danger. That sounds scary enough, but you also have to go through a rigorous and extensive training regime which will see you undergo a  number of difficult and risky situations too. If you don’t think you can handle that, you should probably not apply but if so, it could prove to be a worthwhile and valuable career choice which could make your life considerably more complete. A Career as a Lifeguard Maybe you want to be on the side of things where you help people in difficult situations. In this instance, there are many roles to choose between, one being life guarding. Being a lifeguard is hugely rewarding, especially if you do actually ever have to save someone’s life. Its likely to be enjoyable too,   so consider trying to find lifeguard and swim teacher jobs if you want to get into this career sector. A Career as a Pilot Of course it is rare that planes actually crash, and statistically you are more likely to be in danger on a bus than a plane but nonetheless, there is no denying the incredibly highly risky nature of flying a plane. If you have always wanted to be a pilot, you should look into it as soon as you can. As the training process is lengthy. However, get started and you will soon find yourself in one of the most coveted jobs in the world.   Other Careers to Consider Nothing says risky more, than entering into a burning building to save lives. This is something firefighters are doing everyday without any hesitation. Once you have gone through training, youll be on the front line, waiting for the call. Potentially risking your life on every shift. Other careers to consider if risk is on your tick list is joining the military. Signing up to a community, where everyone is putting themselves in danger for one another. Whilst none of these options should be entered into with the really consideration. They could turn into an extremely fulfilling career.

Margins For a Resume - What is Most Important

Margins For a Resume - What is Most ImportantMargins for a resume can help you get more work and the more you have, the more potential you have. It's not all about making your resume look nice; it's about making sure that you are making yourself stand out as being much more than what the majority of other applicants are looking for.You need to be able to create a good resume so that you are noticed as being the best candidate for the job. Your resume needs to be short and concise so that it gets noticed and so that people notice you.A good way to help you with this is to include some basic information in the top of your resume. One way to do this is to use bullet points to bring your data together. These are just a few of the basic things that you should put on your resume. When it comes to your resume, there are some things that you should make sure that you put on your resume. For example, don't just put your job title. Instead, put a little something about what you do for your curr ent employer and why you think that they would be interested in hiring you. This is going to make a big difference because when someone reads your resume, it will be to find out whether or not you are qualified for the position. If they come away from your resume thinking that you are qualified, then it will show them that you really did your research on the company and if you feel that they would like to hire you then you will have a great chance of getting the job.Using bullet points is another tip that you can use in order to help you with your good overview of your skills and abilities. In doing this, you can explain any abilities that you think will make you stand out as someone who would be a good fit for the position. It may seem odd to give yourself so much credit but if you are reading your resume carefully, then you know exactly what the person is looking for in your resume. If you can put together a resume that contains these three elements, then you are ahead of the game. Plus, this will help you build your personal brand and will make your resume stand out in the crowd.

Pricing How to Price Your Business Product or Service

Pricing How to Price Your Business' Product or Service Have a great new product or service? Now you need to decide how much to sell it for. “It’s absolutely necessary to get the pricing right, or you won’t be in business very long,” says University of Rochester marketing professor George Cook. Here’s how to proceed: Know Your Costs Those are more than the obvious onesâ€"what it takes to make each widgetâ€"says small-business expert Susan Solovic. You also have indirect costs, like marketing and salary. Allocate a share of those costs to each item you produce. Spy on the Competition Find out what others in your market charge. Use the tool at sba.gov/sizeup to see who your competitors are and, if possible, do a little secret shopping, advises Solovic. Add a markup to your costs in line with industry standards. Establish Your Value You can charge a premium and deliver quality results, says Cook, or charge less and aim for higher volume. Either way, you’ll have to convince customers they are getting a good deal. Solovic says an informal focus group of friends and family can provide a pricing gut check. 7 Tips For Juggling Work And Grad School - Work It Daily

7 Tips For Juggling Work And Grad School - Work It Daily Graduate school can be challenging in and of itself, so when you add a full-time job into the equation, your success will depend on how efficiently you manage your time. Doing the work-and-school juggle isn’t easy, but it’s possible to excel at both. Here are some tips for juggling work and grad school successfully: 1. Keep track of deadlines. Between work projects and term papers, your deadline schedule might seem like one big blur. The only way to ensure you don’t hand work in late or totally forget about an exam is to mark it on your calendar, either the old-fashioned way on paper or digitally. If you go the digital route, you can even set reminders and alerts to keep you on your toes. 2. Use your commuting time wisely. If there’s a way to avoid being behind the wheel, taking a bus, subway, or railroad is a great way to sneak in some reading or study time. Along those lines, you should also try to take advantage of other moments in the day when small pockets of free time arise, by always keeping study notes handy. You could also sneak in a work phone call if you have a gap between classes at school. 3. Don’t overload your schedule. Take as many courses as needed to maintain full-time student status, or make the decision to go part-time. Either way, don’t try to rush through your graduate school program. It’s better to take an extra semester or two and do well, than to burn yourself out by taking too many credits. 4. Allow time for schoolwork in your daily schedule. Just as you’d put a webinar or meeting into your email calendar, designate time in your day to your studies. Perhaps it’s an hour after dinner or smaller windows of time, such as half of your lunch hour. Once you write down your intention to study and set aside a time to do it, you’re more likely to follow through. 5. Work on projects or papers a little every day, instead of cramming. It’s easy to put a large project on the back burner if the due date is a few weeks away, but all-nighters aren’t a great idea when you have to get up for work in the morning. That method may have worked occasionally during your college years, but the nature of graduate work, as students from Olivet Nazarene University graduate school would attest, is a lot of reading, research, and critical thinking. That’s not the kind of work you want to be doing at 3 a.m. 6. Be upfront about your school commitment and get your boss’ support. Trying to better yourself with a graduate degree is always a positive thing, but keeping it a secret at work will only lead to potential problems. For the simple reason that there may be times when you’ll have to leave early to take a final, or perhaps you want to print something out from your office printer, and you don’t want to have to make up a cover story every time. Of course, you have to be willing to make up any lost work time by staying late on a non-school night or taking some work home with you. The key is to strike the right balance so that you’re not neglecting either of your responsibilities. 7. Make technology work for you. It’s easy to get addicted to your smartphone or tablet, whether it’s hanging out on your favorite social media sites or playing Candy Crush, but make sure that it doesn’t become a procrastination crutch. Give yourself a time limit on technology fun, and incorporate some mobile apps into your repertoire that’ll help keep your tasks organized, or allow you to study on the go. It will take sacrifices on your part to do well in graduate school and still give 100% at the office, but if you’re determined and organized, you can make it happen. Enjoy this article? The 5 Steps to Standing Your Ground With a Toxic Person

The 5 Steps to Standing Your Ground With a Toxic Person A lot of people say family is everything. People swear that they are nothing without their family. What happens when you have toxic people in your family? How are you supposed to spend time and energy with people who dont have your best interests in mind? Are you still supposed to enjoy your family? Is spending time with your family something you will continue to enjoy and treasure? Sadly, it is not likely. This is not the ideal situation, but something I can completely relate to. Having folks in your family that irritate and frustrate you is probably something you can relate to as well. So, how do you deal with these negative folks? Lets discuss1. Call a spade a spade. Most people are delusional about who they are in this world. Why? The truth is too hard to face. Do people really want to acknowledge they are mean, spiteful, jealous, hateful, greedy or disturbed? No The alternative feels so much better. It is up to you to be ana lytical when dealing with others. As Maya Angelou once said When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. If you want to create healthy boundaries with toxic people, you must be willing to clearly identify those that fit the bill.2. Identify your triggers. We all have triggers that drive us up the wall. I have family members that love to point out my weight or something negative about my general appearance. This is a huge trigger for me. Why not just say hello? Or, god forbid, ask me if I am happy? Life is much more than how we look. Instead of getting mad every time someone said this to me, I took a step back to realize this was a trigger for me and decided how I spend time with people like that. Can you identify the triggers toxic people use against you?3. Accept what is in your control. As a coach, I love to teach and remind my clients what they have control over. You are in control of what you say, what you think, and what you do. You cant control the actions , thoughts or behaviors of others (especially toxic people).4. Be willing to get real.Getting real means you are willing to have a conversation where you lay out what you need to continue to interact with the toxic person (if you must) without losing your mind. This conversation might not be easy or comfortable, but it is very much needed. Whether you are introverted or extroverted, you can have this conversation. Here are some tips to make the conversation go well1. Write out the talking points. One of the best ways to be comfortable with speaking with others involves being prepared for the conversation. Write out what you want to get across with the other person. Hey ______________ ,Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, I really appreciate it. I wanted to talk to you about something I have been thinking about for awhile. Recently, when you _____________________ (conversation or action) it ___________ (describe the issue with the conversation or action and why it bothered you). I am not sure what your intentions were, but going forward I would love for you to stop ___________________ (saying or doing). Can you agree to doing this?2. Take a deep breath. It is so much easier to calm our mind and body when we take a pause to take a deep breath. Before you departure this conversation, take a deep breath and focus on the outcome you want to take place.3. Stay focused on what you want to get out of the conversation. This a conversation that you need to have. It doesnt matter how the other person responds. You owe it to yourself to lay out what you need to have a amiable relationship with this person. If the person takes offense, that is none of your business. Focus on the words you need to get across, not how they will respond.4. Remain calm. You catch more with honey than vinegar. If you want to have a calm and logical conversation, you need to show up with that intention. Even if the other side gets emotional or illogical during the conversation, it isnt a race to the bottom. Stay calm and focus on what you are saying.5. Accept the conversation is a victory, regardless of the outcome. It is brave and bold to live a life where you stand up for yourself and draw a line with others who are disrespectful or hurtful towards you. Whether the conversation goes well is irrelevant. Speaking your truth is a win.5. Pay attention to the action over the words. To create and enforce healthy boundaries with a toxic person, it is important to focus on the actions not just the words said. The person may say all the right things when you confront them about the past difficulties you share with them. But, if they refuse to take new actions and prescribe to the boundaries you put in place, you will need to assess if you are willing to still have this person in your life or if you need to take action to remove them.--Natasha Nurse is a speaker, coach, podcaster, and content creator.
