Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2
Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2 Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2 Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat, Part 2Part 1 of Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat introduced you to the work of Fiorenzo Omenetto. Part 2 explores how he and his team built the device and the changes future versions of it will undergo.behauptung are not the first devices developed to measure food intake, but others have had various limitations intricate microphones, accelerometers, and electromyography to monitor chewing movements awkward mouth guards, bulky wiring, and systems requiring frequent sensor replacement. Using ambient radio waves prevalent in modern day environments eliminates the need for a power supply. In theory we can modify the bioresponsive layer in these sensors to target other chemicals we are really limited only by our creativity. Dean Fiorenzo Omenetto, Tufts University The sensors three layers act like a tiny antenna tha t sends information to receivers, like this one worn by the ear. Image SilkLab, Tufts UniversityThe work on this device evolved out of work on implantable devices Omenettos lab has been working on for years. This was one of the many evolutions, platforms, and materials we designed, Omenetto says. Its been a long journey. The initial work on this device used a single larger layer that operated on a single frequency. We progressively went smaller and to a multi-layered device because of functionality, he explains. For You Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction The biggest challenges have been those that are endemic to the material formats and interfaces, he says. Its never easy to interface something that has to operate in a wet environment. So there were a lot of challenges in designing the material, assembling the material, and having active layers of the materials. Its always about material format and how to make materials versatile and useful. While pleased with reaching the milestone described in the article, he still considers the sensing fairly primitive and requiring more work. The format opens the door to making the sensors more sophisticated to build more sensitivity and specificity. This is just one step along the way of making something that can be of physiological utility, he says. When asked when it will be ready to go, he responds, What for? To measure what? If you want the sensor to communicate and store every minute the exact number of calories youve consumed, its going to take a long while. If you want a coarse measurement of whether you have high pH or low pH in the mouth, then you need to find a partner to commercialize it. That can happen fairly quickly. These things depend on so many intangibles and depend on what you want to do with it.From a scientific standpoint, the goal is to build greater sensitivity and specificity for certain markers of health that can be detected in the oral cavity. To do so, the team plans to continue to refine the mat erial format and to work with variables that can provide physiological indicators for answering certain medical questions. In theory we can modify the bioresponsive layer in these sensors to target other chemicals we are really limited only by our creativity, Omenetto says. We have extended common RFID technology to a sensor package that can dynamically read and transmit information on its environment, whether affixed to a tooth, to skin, or any other surface.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Read MoreHot Opportunities in Microfluidics for MEsEngineers Contain Cancer CellsResearchers 3D Print on Skin for Breakthrough Applications For Further Discussion

How being a perfectionist really is your biggest weakness
How being a perfectionist really is your biggest weaknessHow being a perfectionist really is your biggest weaknessWhether youve been through a series of interviews, or youve spent a considerable amount of time preparing for one, you know the dreaded question - Whats your greatest weakness? And, if youre familiar with that inquiry, you also know one of the most common responses - Im a perfectionist. Many people go with this response because it appears to give them the ability to spin a negative into a positive. After all, perfectionists work hard to make everything, well, perfect. However, this response only scratches the surface of a real answer. If we dig a little deeper, it becomes clear perfectionism is a weakness if youre truly obsessed with every detail of everything you do.So, lets dig in - here are four ways perfectionism works against you in the bro, and one big way to make it work for you.1. Youre hard to work withLets get the biggest negative out of the way first. Sometim es, perfectionists build a bad reputation for themselves at the office because, well, nothings ever good enough. Whether youre a team leader who sends a task back for tweaks multiple times, or youre a staffer who cant turn something in until youve examined it repeatedly, your co-workers might lose their appreciation for your hard work after a while. To break this habit, you should learn how to delegate - no matter how hard it is for you to do it at first. Itll make you more productive and a better colleague if you master the practice. And then, you can point to this lesson in your next interview, admitting perfectionism is a weakness, but explaining how working on it has made you a better employee all around.2. You dont go for itPerfectionism and insecurity go together like peanut butter and jelly. In other words, youre so concerned about getting it right 100 percent of the time that youre afraid to fail. That causes you to take a backseat in your career, and perhaps in other aspect s of life, too, because its safer to stick with what you know.No matter how good you are at your job, though, you wont get far without taking on new tasks and risks. Start by taking steps to overcome your insecurity - accepting the fact that everyone fails sometimes is a big part of it. It will help you let go of your perfectionism, too, if you admit its modell to make missteps along the way.3. You focus on the wrong thingsAnother con to perfectionism is that you focus on all the wrong details. Think about your last big project - you probably mulled over the meat of it for quite some time, but how many hours did you spend tweaking fonts, designing slides, changing the colors of bar graphs, etc.?These tiny tasks are just begging you to let your perfectionist side out, but theyre a time suck that draws you away from bigger to-dos. Spending all those hours on the details undoubtedly pulled you away from another project or presentation that deserved more of an effort than you could gi ve it in the long run.4. You never celebrate youFocusing on every detail is tiring, but you also cant stop. As soon as you finish one project - and, lets face it, its hard for a perfectionist to live up to their own specifications and consider something done - youre onto the next. That task gets the same detailed treatment, too, until a deadline forces you to complete it. From there, the cycle continues. If youre always go, go, going with projects in this way, you never have time to reflect on the things you could have done differently. This type of reflection can actually enhance your workplace performance, which is great nachrichten for perfectionists. But without time to breathe between projects, youll never have a moment to think back and improve.Plus, you also deserve a pat on the back from time to time, and the end of a big project or presentation is the perfect time to celebrate you. It might be a challenge as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, but giving yourself credit for t he hard work you do is a well-deserved part of the process that will make you feel even better about the time and effort you put into whatever task youve just finished. You can make it work, thoughFortunately, theres good news in all of this - perfectionism doesnt have to be all bad. Its all about loosening the reins, delegating or otherwise taking a step back. A more relaxed approach will make things better for your state of mind and the states of mind of everyone with whom you work.Plus, your new outlook will help you in your next interview, too. You know your biggest weakness is perfectionism but you can avoid the clich and point to what, specifically, is holding you back and share all the steps youre taking to make it better. Ultimately, though, your attention to detail shows you care, and the right amount will impress any employer. Most importantly, though, the happy balance you strike will make you feel better about yourself both professionally and personally, which will furt her spur your success. This article first appeared on Punched Clocks.

Learn How Focus Groups Are Used in Advertising
Learn How Focus Groups Are Used in AdvertisingLearn How Focus Groups Are Used in AdvertisingIn marketing, advertising, product design, the film industry, and many other professions, a focus group is often used to test the possible effectiveness of a product or campaign. What a Focus Group Is Basically, its a group of people, from different backgrounds, assembled to participate in a moderated discussion about a particular product, service or advertising campaign. It will either be used to gain insights before work has started, or used to judge and guide the work being done. Often despised by the creative department, and loved by the clients, the focus group is often seen as a way to justify the expense of an upcoming advertising campaign by getting actual consumer feedback before it launches. However, this research is often best taken with a huge grain of salt. As you will discover, it can give credence to something that will actually fail once it hits the market, or stop somethi ng in its tracks that was actually destined to be a huge hit. The Types of Focus Groups There are many types of focus groups these days, especially since technology has advanced to allow remote access teleconferencing. However, the major types of focus groups are still very similar to those that were being used in the 1960s. They are Moderated groups As the personenname suggests, a trained moderator controls the focus group. Most focus groups are done this way.Unmoderated groups Highly discouraged, the client or agency can simply put a product or service in front of potential consumers, and take notes from behind a two-way mirror. In these cases, a respondent often steps up and becomes a proxy moderator.Client-based focus groups The client participates in the focus group, either openly or undercover, to get feedback first had.Opposing moderators In this scenario, two trained moderators participate, each taking a different view of the product or service being discussed. New tech nology methods now include Remote teleconferencing An audio or video network is used to create a focus group connecting clients, agency staff and respondents across the country, or even the world.Online focus groups One of the most cost-effective new methods, a virtual group is created using the Internet. An online moderator controls the group interaction. The Advantages of Focus Groups When doing anfangsbuchstabe research for a product or service, focus groups can be invaluable. Although the information is subjective, it can assist in product development, new service improvements and avenues for advertising agencies to explore. By learning as much as possible about what the consumers think of a product or service, you are gaining valuable insights that can help ad agencies develop strong campaigns. The Drawbacks of Focus Groups The main drawback is the one in a million outcome of the groups. No two focus groups are alike, comprising different people of differing backgrounds and ages. But even if focus groups used the same people every time, attitudes to products and services can change overnight. How people feel, what is going on in their lives, and many other factors can affect the outcome. So its never consistent. The easy to please factor should also be considered. Many people find it difficult to be brutally honest, and will often just give moderators the answers they think they should be giving. Cherry-picking respondents who are biased towards the product or service can exacerbate this. And of course, one of the biggest problems of focus groups is trying to please all the people, all the time. If ad campaigns do not offend anyone in the room, or even cause a fiery discussion, then they are considered good. But thats counter to what advertising is supposed to do. Creative, disruptive advertising is designed to catch the attention, and will never please everyone. This type of advertising will rarely come through a focus group unscathed. As Henry F ord once famously said, If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses. Knowing this, you really have to be careful with a focus group. One way or another, It could cost you a lot of money.

7 Reasons You Wont Get Called Back after Interviews
7 Reasons You Won't Get Called Back after Interviews No Callbacks after Interviews? 7 Reasons You Won't Get Called Back after Interviews The most common work complaint I hear is from frustrated job candidates who dont hear back from an employer after an interview. People tend to take this silence personally, but it's rarely a reflection on your qualifications or how you handled the interview. Interviewers don't call candidates back for a myriad of reasons, most having little to do with you. Here are seven that come to mind: 1. BUDGET ISSUES. If you need money, you go to the ATM. But getting funds released at the corporate level is usually a more cumbersome process. There are often several departments involved, increasing the odds that a key player is out of the office. Budgets get put on hold, and the person who wants to hire you has little or no control over that. What can you do? During the interview, ask when the company (not the interviewer) wants the position filled by and if the money for the role has been allocated. 2. NOT A PRIORITY. To you, getting a new job is everything: It's the answer to your financial problems or a way to lift yourself out of a current work funk. But to the employer, you're just another worker filling their needs. On the importance scale, it's safe to assume the employer is more important to you than you are to them. That's the harsh reality, so don't torture yourself waiting for the phone to ring. What can you do? Keep looking for other opportunities, keep yourself busy, and keep working hard at your current gig if you have one! 3. BAD REFERENCES AND RESEARCH. Sometimes the silence that follows a job interview IS your fault. If a company likes you, they'll often contact your references and do a little Google research. What you have posted on social networks can turn off an interviewer, even if you think it's benign. I recently saw a guy beat out another candidate because he liked the same band as the boss. That's lame, but that's real life. Also, you never know if a reference will do you in. For example, I was terribly disappointed recently to find out that two of my references were lackadaisical in returning phone calls to the employer. I was still offered the job, but forced to re-evaluate my professional references. What can you do? Always keep in regular contact with your professional references, not just when you need something. Give them a heads up that a call could be coming their way and that you would greatly appreciate their immediate attention. 4. YOU'RE THE BACKUP. A good employer will always have a contingency plan. Sometimes, that plan is YOU. You might be the fallback candidate for a position in case the first candidate falls through. A company can never let you know this! No one likes playing second fiddle, and sometimes, an employer's silence can indicate you're the runner up. You would probably still take the job, but the new company wants you to think you're the one. What can you do? It's hard to know if you're the fallback. But after any interview, send a sincere thank-you note. After that, your follow-up must be strong but not overbearing. I recommend that you follow-up no more than four times over the course of six weeks in this order: phone, email, email, phone. 5. THEY FOUND ANOTHER CANDIDATE. Theres always someone better than you. Sorry, the truth hurts. What can you do? Accept it and mutter to yourself that everything happens for a reason. 6. INTERNAL BATTLE. Sometimes the person interviewing you gives you every indication an offer is imminent and thenPOOF!silence. Perhaps the owners nephew is now interested in your job and workplace nepotism strikes again! Or, there's the possibility an overzealous manager scheduled the interview before the job was approved by the powers that be. What can you do? Chalk it up to experience and move on. 7. THEY LOST YOUR INFO. Its an unlikely scenario, but it's possible that your file disappeared, your email address vanished, or the person who interviewed you suffered from memory loss. What can you do? Sometimes following up with more than one person at the organization is the way to go. For anyone whos been interviewed and met with silence afterward, you know it stinks, whether you wanted the job or not. I commend and respect the employers who make it a point to contact every person they interviewed for every job. Bookmark this blog post; if you dont hear back after your next interview, at least youll understand why.

Study says a bath helps with stress more than showers
Study says a bath helps with stress more than showers Study says a bath helps with stress more than showers Though showers have been proven to help relieve stress and even serve as your own personal think tank at times, the bath is making a comeback it seems. Yes, sometimes soaking in your filth is absolutely necessary it seems.A new study from the Japan Health and Research Center, Tokyo City University and Jichi Medical University found that there are a number of physical, as well as mental health, benefits from a daily soak in the tub.The study surveyed 33 people who spent two straight weeks taking baths every day followed by two weeks of taking showers every day. The subjects reported that the bath weeks helped improve their health and skin conditions and also helped to decrease stress, fatigue, and pain.Soak it upThe authors of the study believe the positive impacts were due to the hyperthermic properties of baths which can increase your body temperature and stimulate your metabolism. And letâs face it, putting nice oils in your bath mixed with some candles and Norah Jones playing in the background sounds a little more relaxing than hopping in the shower.Another Japanese study recently showed that the stress markers, cortisol, and chromogranin, decreased in people who took a bath after approximately 60 minutes of a particularly stressful event. This is a small sample size but do, at least, consider a bath after a long, stressful day at work.

How to Dispute a Job Title Change
How to Dispute a Job Title Change How to Dispute a Job Title Change Companies can change titles at will, as long as there isnt an employment contract in place. It would be rare to find a contracted title outside of a union setting. There isnt a lot of public humiliation involved either; even it feels embarrassing. You told everyone that you got a promotion. Friends, family, and clients know. Heck, the public relations people were even involved. Do you know how many of those people care? Your spouse, your parents, and you. And those people only care because they love you and want you to be happy. Everyone else? They dont spend more than three seconds a year thinking about your title. Now, all that said, this is unacceptable behavior on the part of your HR head. The mistake was made on their end, and they should fix it there. That fix should not involve you reverting to your old title. And now, heres a little secret: HR is not the boss. Sure, lots of people think HR has the final word on something like this. But, they dont. Management often concedes to HR. Its a nice excuse. âHR said no.â Say that, and we all shuffle back to our desks, cursing the bad HR person. While in this case, your HR person is behaving badly, they can be overridden. Maybe not by your direct supervisor, but there is a chain of command, which means somebody can overrule them. If you want to dispute a job title change, you have a number of steps you can take. Accept the Title Mixup Even though were trying to figure out a way to help you through this, winning is not the only possible outcome. So, first, if you can get to a place where you are okay with the job title change no matter what happens, youll sleep easier. Talk to Your Boss If your boss wanted to promote you to a job with chief in the title, he should be able to. Your boss is not a first-level supervisor with three years of experience. You undoubtedly report to someone pretty senior. Go to your boss and say, âHR just told me that my title wasnt formally approved. Since I was introduced with the new title at the trade show last week, and PR has officially publicized my promotion, it will be pretty embarrassing for the company if they have to backpedal. What do we need to do to get this approved through proper channels as soon as possible?â Note, this dialogue does a few things. First, it doesnt mention your embarrassment at all. Youre making it all about the company. Wont the company look silly if the title is changed? This is important because senior leadership people are very concerned about how the company is portrayed in the public eye. They care less about your feelings (although good managers do care about your feelings as well). Second, if you state the problem this way, youre assuming that the chief title is the right one and its just a paperwork issue. Youre not asking for a promotion or title change. Youre asking how to fix the problem. Find Out the Real Issue HR people are typically super busy and dont care about silly things. So, if your boss gets pushback, find out why the title of chief strategist isnt working for the head of HR. It may be that everyone at your pay level is supposed to have a title starting with associate vice president (AVP) and its a higher grade for chief. If thats the problem, change to AVP and let it drop. However, if the real problem is that they wanted to be consulted and wasnt, then you go on to the next step. Escalate If your boss cannot or will not escalate this, you can escalate it yourself. Go to your bosss boss and do the same thing. Since everyone signed off on this the first time, it should fix the problem. You can continue going up the hierarchy until you reach the HR persons boss. This may be the CEO, it may be the CFO, or it may be someone else. But that person has the power and authority to override an HR decision. Whatâs important is to recognize that HR is never the boss and that you are still doing the same job even with a different title. Because titles vary so much between companies, there isnt even a lot of difference on the resume between a senior director title and a chief title. Whats important is your accomplishments.

10 Tips for Finding a Job in a New City
10 Tips for Finding a Job in a New City 10 Tips for Finding a Job in a New City When youâve decided you want to move to a new city, or youâre relocating for other reasons, it can be a challenge to figure out the best strategy for finding a new position. Should you move first? Or, should you try to line up a new job and then relocate? Whats the best way to get hired when youre here and the jobs are there? How to Decide When to Start a Job Search There isnât one answer to the question of when you should start job hunting if you want or need to move. Another factor to consider is the type of job youâre looking for. Itâs quicker and easier to get hired for lower level positions than it is for jobs further up the career ladder.
